Snoring is commonly associated with old people right? Parents sawing logs all night and trips to grandma and grandpa's house filled with memories of snoring while laid back in the recliner chair. However, snoring can happen in young adults and even children. Aside from the obvious annoyances that snoring brings, it can have negative consequences on overall health. It is also common for snoring to be accompanied with 'obstructive sleep apnea', which is when there are pauses in breathing and often gasping for breath during sleep.
Signs/symptoms of snoring:
Snoring is due to the vibration of the soft tissues in the back of the throat. During sleep when those tissues are most relaxed the flow of air can vibrate and make those classic snoring sounds. In children, snoring is not a normal occurrence and should be evaluated by a cranial pediatric specialist. Due to the close relationship with all the soft tissue structures of the mouth and throat, snoring in children can be cause for concern. It may indicate that the facial and cranial bones are compressing the airway during sleep. Cranial adjusting for children does wonders to open up that space and leave more room for the tongue and palate to rest without blocking the airway. It also increases nerve supply to these structures which will deter sleep apnea.
Snoring is more than just a nuisance, especially in babies, children and young adults. If your child is snoring or stopping breathing completely, it's time to get evaluated by one of our pediatric specialist chiropractors at Thrive Family Chiropractic.
