Your head is made up of 8 cranial bones that make up the skull, and 14 facial bones that make up the face. These bones articulate with each other to create the shape of the head which then houses and protects the brain. The union of these bones create small spaces for nerves to travel directly from the brain to the eyes, ears, mouth, jaw, face, tongue, etc. These nerves account for some of our most basic senses like sight and smell, but also basic motor skills like swallowing, breathing, and heart rate.
Why do these cranial bones matter so much?
For newborns or young children, cranial bone function is incredibly important for proper brain development. Baby's cerebellum (part of the brain) doubles in size within the first 2 years of life. This means there are 2 pivotal years to ensure that your baby's brain will develop fully without future complications. Children are more susceptible to injuries to the skull due to the birthing process and common falls every child experiences as they learn to walk. Have you seen babies in those helmets? The purpose of those helmets is to properly shape a baby's head. However a trained cranial chiropractor can get better, quicker, safer results for these children. These results are long lasting and have huge impacts on the baby's immune system and neurological function.
Newborn skulls are still very soft when they are born. This is the perfect opportunity to see a chiropractor with cranial expertise so as to avoid this!

Cranial Adjusting for Adults
There are 2 great reasons that adults need cranial work too! The most common being after a head injury. Taking a blow to the head can create an excess of pressure built up within the skull and starving the brain of blood flow. This can happen after a car accident, blow to the face/head, baseball hitting the head, etc... Common symptoms that cranial adjusting can help with post concussion is: headaches, blurred vision, speech difficulties, memory lapses, brain fog, emotional irregularities, decreased reflexes, altered coordination, and behavior changes.
The 2nd best reason to see a cranial specialist chiropractor is to help with cognitive function. Just like with any other bodily process, the brain creates metabolic waste. When your body creates waste, it eliminates it through urination and defecation (pee and poop!). However, when the brain creates waste, it gets flushed out by CSF (cerebral spinal fluid). CSF is made by the brain and circulates throughout the inner brain, the skull, and the spinal cord. This precious CSF flow is controlled by built-in pumps at the bottom of the spinal cord. This process flushes out waste and toxins that build up over time.
Imagine if you had a toilet that wouldn't flush, it's getting clogged and stinky. The best way to get that out is to pump fresh water to it and flush it out! This is why we work with cranial bones. Creating movement in the skull increases CSF flow which allows a perfect and natural way for your brain to detox.
