Generalized knee pain can be a frustrating experience for everyone. Many times knee pain goes undiagnosed because there is no definite "diagnosis" to be had. People try pain killers, massage, physical therapy, and acupuncture to alleviate their pain with no success. This is often true when knee pain cannot be pinpointed to one thing, but rather a myriad of alignment issues, muscle imbalances, improper tracking, overuse, and/or arthritis.
There are many structures that attach to the knee that allow for proper movement and stability. However, this can mean that there are many opportunities for pain, seeing as that the knee is one of the most used joints in the body.
Looking at the structures of the knee, we can see a lot of muscles, tendons, and fascia. All these structures keep the bones aligned and the tendons contained. Along the entire surface of the knee is smooth cartilage that allows for easy gliding of the patella, femur, and tibia bones. Pain in the knee can be from any of these small structures, or a combination of them.
Osteoarthritis - early degeneration of the knee cartilage
Tendinitis - inflammation of the knee tendons
Bursitis - inflammation of the bursa sack within the knee, usually from overuse injuries
Patellar tracking disorders (aka, chondromalacia patella) - cartilage underneath the kneecap breaks down, scar tissue forms
Ligament tears - usually from a traumatic spontaneous injury
IT band dysfunction - IT band attaches to the outside of the knee, commonly it is tight and can cause pain at the attachment point
None of those common knee diagnosis are getting to the root cause of WHY those symptoms began. This is why it is so important to be assessed by a chiropractor who is knowledgeable in addressing deficiencies in the knee leading to knee pain. Most common problems that CAUSE the issues discussed above can be attributed to these things:
Poor posture
Tight IT bands
Misalignments of the bones (femur, tibia, fibula)
Imbalanced muscle development
Bad squat technique
Ill fitting or old shoes
Being overweight
Improper patellar tracking
Stiff feet
Pelvic imbalance
Nerve compression in the low back
Poor mobility
Chronic injury
