When your baby is born there is an innately driven chain of developmental events that take place. Beautifully designed with purpose, your newborn will start to strengthen and mold it's head, face, and mouth immediately following birth. Let's explore how babies heads are formed and how chiropractic can have a lifelong positive impact on the health of your baby.
As babies are passing through the birth canal, the bones of the skull must come together so as to fit through the narrow space. When the head reaches the other side, a rapid expansion happens where the cranial bones then separate and create the shape of the head. When the baby takes it's first suckle on the nipple, it further establishes the placement of these bones. Place your tongue on the hard part on the roof of your mouth. This is called the hard palate and it's made of 2 bones that fuse together. Above that, you have your facial bones, your sinus cavities, and then your brain. The skull (cranial) bones are perfectly designed to allow nerves to travel from the brain through small holes and flow out to the face, lips, tongue, nose, ears, etc. Think of puzzle pieces that fit together with small gaps for nerves. It is pivotal for your baby to have well fitting puzzle pieces. Here are some things that can be affected by misaligned cranial bones:
If you've already had children you know that the head is very a very fragile area with openings or "soft spots". These are the areas the bones will grow into and knit together to get a fully enclosed cranium. This usually happens by age 2. This means there are 2 pivotal years to ensure a properly developed skull, face, palate, airway, nasal sinuses, and eyes. At Thrive Family Chiropractic, we have extensive background in cranial sacral therapy. This is a technique designed to alleviate issues listed above and ensure your child develops a strong cranial/facial system. As your child grows you can rest assured they will not run into common adult problems associated with chronic misaligned cranial bones. Examples of this would be: snoring, sinus problems, sleep apnea, speech problems, and headaches. Don't wait until adulthood to address these preventable symptoms.
Frederick Douglass said that “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
