Birth is a beautiful life event...right?
It seems like after a birth there is always a perfect picture posted to social media of new baby with a smiling, relieved-looking mom. However, it's not always picture perfect, many times birth is far from perfect! It is so important now more than ever in the climate of COVID, that families know all the options when getting ready to give birth.
During this pandemic, the process of giving birth has been slipping down an uncertain path. Hospital protocols are still ever changing by the day, and fear is higher with the number of cases rising around us. We want you to know that your birth is important. Even though it may feel like chaos is surrounding your birth process, you are still in control!
Here are some important things to ponder:
Are you giving birth in a hospital, birthing center, home, pool, or other? Set up a nice setting for yourself, regardless of where you are. Surround your area with pictures of things to remind you of what's important, or what makes you feel the most supported and loved.
Firstly, take time to think about who you want with you. This is very important because some settings will limit who is allowed to accompany you during birth. Keep your circle small so you won't be disappointed if as many people can't stay with you. Those distant family members you just met might not make the cut this time. Pick your #1 and #2 person and stick with that!
Even though most births don't go exactly to "plan", it is still essential to have a plan in place. This will allow you to fall back on something secure and well thought out. Making decisions mid labor will not lead you to make the best choices.
Many women focus only on the process of birth knowing little of what to expect after. Write out something concrete on how you will allow yourself to recover and process whatever birth you've just endured. Allow more time than you think!

3. Meet with a Midwife:
A midwife is a highly specialized health professional who provide maternal and newborn care through pregnancy, birth, and post partum. There are varying degrees of education they receive which allows them to work in the hospital or home setting. They can deliver babies, provide postnatal care, and can even perform your annual gynecological exam. Midwifery is a growing practice especially amongst those choosing to do birth in a non hospital setting. Here is an amazing certified professional midwife:
