The spine has 144 joints and 24 discs. The job of the spinal disc is to disperse the forces put on the spine and provide cushion for the vertebra. A healthy disc allows just enough space for the nerve to exit the spine without impingement. One of the most common injuries to the spine usually involves the disc. Over time spinal discs can weaken and degrade, and potentially create very painful symptoms. Consequently, a degenerated disc constricts the nerve space and creates damage to the nerve which can result in radiating pain down the arms or legs. Proper spinal care and mobility are crucial for extending the life of the discs and spine!
The spinal disc is made out of a jelly toothpaste-like material in the center (called a nucleus), surrounded by layers of strong fibers (called the annulus). There are varying degrees of disc injuries involving these 2 structures.
A tear in the annular fibers result in a weak spot in the disc. This leaves the disc vulnerable to bulging or complete herniation. Even a small tear can be extremely painful and create inflammation in the spine. Once the disc has been injured it becomes crucial to seek help in order to limit the amount of permanent damage to the spine. If left untreated, it can lead to serious neurological problems including loss of bladder and bowel function.
