Chiropractic Helps Vertigo
Everyone has experienced some kind of vertigo in their lives, mostly during childhood! Vertigo is a feeling of dizziness. Much like when you were a child spinning in circles and then abruptly stopped. Your body may have stopped spinning, but your brain thinks otherwise. You brain continues that sensation as if you were still spinning. Let's dive deeper into our understanding of this.
The body has 3 main mechanisms to maintain balance:
- Eyes
- Joints
- Ears
When discussing vertigo, we are talking about balance within the ears.
The ear has canals in them full of liquid. As we move around, so does the liquid within the canals. When that fluid moves around, it hits very sensitive micro hairs that then collect that information (speed, direction, pressure, etc) and sends it to the large nerve. The nerve condenses the information and sends it to the eyes and specific areas of the brain. Now your brain knows where you are, and how to balance itself!
Vertigo symptoms can be caused by an array of things:
- BPPV - Benign Proxismal Positional Vertigo - This is when small calcium deposits shift around within the inner ear
- Head/neck injury
- Meniere's disease - Build up of fluid within the ear causing increased pressure.
- Vestibular neuritis - Viral infection of the nerve itself
- Migraines
- Brain disorders - Stroke, tumor
