The sacroiliac joints or "SI" are a pair of joints at the base of our spine. These joints are made by the two large hip bones joining the sacrum. Together these 3 bones make up the pelvic complex of the SI and pubic joints.
The SI joint is one of the largest and longest joint in the body. It's also one that is used in every step we take as humans. In today's society these joints are under attack from the chair! Sitting creates increased strain in this joint. Especially if your job demands that you sit, these joints are taking a beating. Not only that, anytime we fall on our bottom, this joint gets jarred and potentially injured.
In our office we find that these joints are frequently the most degenerated (arthritic) area of the body. Arthritis sets in when these joints don't move correctly. On x-ray arthritis shows up as bone spurs on the top and bottom of the joint line. When the joints wear down, you can have bone on bone, which unfortunately causes many cases of low back pain. When these joints don't function like they are supposed to, it hurts the low back, knees, feet, and everything in between. Having healthy SI joints is crucial to human movement!
Common medical interventions for pain originating in the SI joints are risky cortisone injections, surgical fusion, and pain medications. At Thrive Family Chiropractic we specialize in pain relief using natural chiropractic adjustments that reduce pain, improve function, and slow the progression of arthritis. Before you try something risky with variable outcomes, try chiropractic first! There are no side effects, it's safe, and can get you out of pain fast.
